2nd Week @ Bronte Nippers

2nd Week @ Bronte Nippers

What a beautiful morning down at the beach!  Unfortunately for us the water was again a bit wild.  Luckily, that seemed to do nothing to dampen nipper spirits.

It was also wonderful to see so many nipper parents at the truly spectacular Bronte Promenade dinner the night before in support of our new club.

Here are a few things to note for this week.

We look forward to meeting all our new parents on Thursday!

As you know, each Bronte nipper family is required to have at least 1 registered parent.  New parents must attend the Parent Induction evening to receive an introduction to the Club, learn about safety requirements and find out about areas in which you can assist.  Attendance will earn you the yellow 'Beach Crew' cap that we ask all nipper parents to wear each Sunday morning.

On Sunday 3 November we will host a special ‘Welcome to Bronte’ Sunday Sips to welcome new parents.  We'd love to see as many of you as possible!  Wear your yellow cap to receive a free drink.

The surf at Bronte is tough and our nippers need to be confident in the water in order to be safe, as well as to progress and enjoy themselves. If your nipper is not doing weekly swim lessons or squads, we strongly encourage you to sign them up. There are many great local swim schools and clubs that cater for all levels, for example UNSW Swim Club (ph: 9385 4881) and Des Renford Swim School (ph: 9093 6300).

Sunday nippers is designed to be non-competitive, where kids learn and practice surf lifesaving skills as a group.  The exception to this is Club Championships which are held on 2 mornings over the season for U8-U14.   At Club Championships, the kids compete in a range of sand and water races using the skills they have learned during nipper sessions.  The child with the most points over both rounds will become that age group's Club Champion at the end of the season.  On those mornings, normal nippers continues for U6 and U7.

Round 1 of Bronte Nipper Club Champs will be held in 2 weeks time on Sunday 3 November.  It will commence at 8am for everyone, and will run for at least 2 hours.

Club Champs is run like a regular nipper carnival.  For that reason, we will need all water safety and officials on board to assist.

There's nothing like a roll from the Bronte BBQ following a bracing nipper session!  The BBQ is also an important fundraiser for the Club.  It is volunteer run and we ask that you support it by pitching in during your rostered time-slot.

The following age groups are scheduled to assist on the BBQ this week:

  • U7 girls: 8am-9.45am
  • U10 girls: 9.45am-11am

The Waverley Shield is a competition between the Waverley Council surf clubs and is held at Bondi each November.  The Waverley Shield is a great introduction to competition for younger and/or new nippers and a good warm up for those who are more experienced or more competitive.  We will need plenty of parents, Water Safety and Officials to assist.  The Waverley Shield will replace normal nippers for U8-U14 on Sunday 17 November and we encourage all our nippers to have a go.

Bronte kids cannot attend nipper carnivals unless Bronte officials also help out.  If your nipper intends to compete at the Waverley Shield, Branch or any other carnival, we ask that at least one parent becomes qualified as an official.  The tasks are not complicated - marshalling the kids, judging the finishing line and recording results.  Straightforward, enjoyable and you'll secure yourself the best spot on the beach with your nipper!

The qualification process involves the following:

-an online theory course you can do at home

-practical experience assisting at Bronte Club Champs on 3 November

-a practical assessment at Waverley Shield on 17 November which involves shadowing an experienced official.

Please email Jess Stewart to get started: jcrstewart@gmail.com

All water safety, age managers and assistants are required to submit their Working With Children (WWC) number to the club by 31 December 2019.  Please email it to Victoria at office@brontesurfclub.com.au

All water safety need to complete their skills maintenance by 31 December 2019.  The refresher course this year is terrific (and compulsory)!  See details here: https://brontesurfclub.com.au/proficiency

Nipper related communications are sent via TeamApp and we recommend that all nipper parents download the app to stay abreast of nipper activities.  Once you have downloaded TeamApp, search for 'Bronte Nippers' and request access to the groups relevant to your family.

The various Bronte nipper training programs have all now kicked off!  It has been terrific to see so many new faces down at the beach for training.  For all those curious to give it a try, please come along to any of these sessions:

  • sand training: with Jordan Williams at Bronte - Wednesdays 3.45pm-5.15pm
  • beginner boards for U9 and up: with Jo Mermaid at Bondi - Tuesdays 4.25pm-5.30pm
  • development squad boards: with Mackenzie Gavin - Tuesdays 4.25pm-5.30pm and Saturdays (time TBA via TeamApp) at Bondi;
  • competition squad boards: with Jason Gavin - Tuesdays 4.30pm-5.30pm and Saturdays (time TBA via TeamApp) at Bronte;  This squad is for nippers who wish to compete and attend carnivals.  Each session is 4km-5km.  Participation in this squad is at the discretion of Jason Gavin.

Communication regarding sand training is via Bronte Nippers TeamApp.  Communication regarding board training is via a separate TeamApp page named 'Bronte Board Trng'.  Please request access to the groups relevant to you.  Note there is a training program published under 'documents' on the Bronte Board Trng TeamApp page.

Boards - purchasing

All nippers who participate in board training need to purchase their own board.  Fibreglass boards are categorised by weight.  When purchasing a fibreglass board, aim for your child's weight + approximately 5kg.  For example, if your child is 38kg, purchase a 45kg board.  If they are in U11 and need the board to last 2 years, you may consider a 50kg board.

New boards: the Club has arranged a discount from Kracka for boards ordered immediately.  Foam boards cost $500 and off-the-shelf fibreglass boards cost $1110 delivered to the Club.  Please email Jason Gavin to arrange: jgavin@ahemg.com.au.  In your email, please advise which board you wish to buy (see the Kracka website here) and the name you would like to be placed on the board itself.

Secondhand boards: there are plenty of second hand boards available on Gear Trade.  There is also a facebook page named 'Second Hand Surf Craft, Surf Only' which advertises boards.

Bronte board buy-back scheme: the Club offers a buy back scheme for foam boards.  This means you can sell your foam board back to the club for $350 after 1 year, and for $250 after 2 years if it is in good condition.  The Club may also buy back fibreglass boards at market value.

Board rental:  our strong preference is for nippers to purchase their own boards.  There are a limited number of boards available to rent for $100 per season.  You must join a training group and return the board for nippers every Sunday.  Please see Craig Betts on Sunday morning to arrange.

Training fees

There is a modest season flat-fee for any training of $150.  Training fees are payable now via this link: SLSA Online Payment Gateway

Please use the following:

Transaction Type: Other (from drop down list)

Amount: $150

If you're new to training, feel free to come and try a session for free before 30 October.

Sunday Sips is held upstairs at the Club every Sunday afternoon.  So if you're new to Bronte SLSC, new to nippers or if you've been around so long you're part of the furniture, join us at the Club from 4.30pm for a drink, dinner and the all-important badge draw.  Catch up with old friends, meet some new faces and let the kids run off some energy on the sand with their mates.

Additional Club activities we'd love to see you at include:

  • pilates with Harries at 6am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings ($10 cash)
  • Sunday afternoon running group: meet at 4.15pm for a run to Bondi and back
  • Sunday afternoon group board paddle for qualified bronze medallion holders at 4pm

The Club hosted a truly stunning fundraising dinner on Saturday night and it was lovely to see so many nipper parents there.  Donations to the fundraising efforts are still very welcome of course!  Please see here for details: https://brontesurfclub.com.au/make-a-pledge
